Patricia Pelehach

As an artist I use a variety of mediums to express my understanding (or questioning) of personal and contemporary social, psychological, and spiritual concerns. Mediums as diverse as clay, printmaking, oil painting, found objects, Japanese brush painting, and more are all vehicles by which I explore and share my investigation of issues as diverse as gender, politics, mind/body, life/death, spirituality and religion, and their implications for achieving or repressing love, accomplishment, freedom and self-expression.

Much of my work is informed by an appreciation of traditional Japanese culture and arts, including Japanese calligraphy or Shodo (the way of the brush), tea ceremony or Chado (the way of tea), and Zazen (sitting meditation) as ways to manifest and understand Zen Buddhist teachings. Other influences are taken from my personal experiences, study of art history, and travels.

I offer thanks to my teachers, Koho Yamamoto, Melissa Stern, Julia Cameron, Masako Inkyo and many others who have steadied my hand and opened my heart.
